Aims and Scope
Connected and Automated Vehicles: An SAE International Journal furthers the state of the art of engineering research by promoting high-quality theoretical and applied investigations in the arena of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) in on-road, off-road, and aerial operational environments. The enormous growth in numbers, diversity, and complexity of CAVs has been driven by: (i) enhancements of fundamental scientific understanding; (ii) technological convergence of computing, communication, and miniaturization; and (iii) increased scale and complexity of tangible embodiments and engineering implementations at the component-, subsystem-, and system-levels.

The Journal seeks to further these goals by publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers that showcase strong theoretical and empirical contributions and findings to the body of engineering knowledge surrounding various facets of the lifecycle treatment (design, modeling, controlling, testing, demonstration, and experimentation) of connected and automated vehicles with an emphasis on the system perspective.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following within the overall CAV system context:

Prof. Venkat N. Krovi is currently the Michelin Endowed SmartState Chair Professor of Vehicle Automation at Clemson University. His research interests are in the lifecycle treatment (design, modeling, analysis, control, implementation, and verification) of novel automation and cyber-physical systems, focusing both on theoretical formulation and experimental validation. His work examines novel design-architectures and scalable-control approaches for modulating physical power (motions/forces) in Distributed Systems to unlock this “power of the many” in emerging automotive, plant-automation, co-robotics, and defense application arenas. His research has been funded by NSF, DARPA, and ARO as well as numerous state and industrial grants. His work has been published in more than 175 journal/conference articles, book chapters, and patents. He has received multiple awards, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award, several best poster, conference, and journal paper awards.

He has played an active leadership role within multiple Manufacturing USA institutes including Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), and most recently the Advanced Robotics Manufacturing (ARM) institute. He has also taken significant leadership roles in research, education, and organization within other professional societies (IEEE, ASME).
